Fiona Beyer is Principal Research Associate and leads the Information Programme at the NIHR Innovation Observatory and the Evidence Synthesis Group. Fiona is a senior research leader with expertise in evidence synthesis and horizon scanning and foresight methodologies, particularly in the retrieval and management of structured and unstructured information, critical appraisal, and synthesis methods. She has 20+ years of experience working in collaboration with clinicians, patients, policy makers and multidisciplinary academic colleagues to evaluate evidence about the effectiveness and impact of interventions in health and social care.
Fiona holds a PhD in evidence synthesis methodologies which critiqued the way that evidence is produced and synthesised to impact health related behaviour change. Her publication record (H index = 40) demonstrates her skill in synthesising quantitative and qualitative data to understand whether and how interventions best improve people’s lives, whilst her academic track record includes £300k as co-applicant from NIHR funding streams, regular peer review of funding applications and journal articles.
The NIHR Innovation Observatory is a world leading health and care innovation scanning centre providing data-driven insights to foster innovation and equitable access to high quality care. We aim to transform health systems and improve population health by providing advanced data-driven insights that foster innovation and equitable access to high quality care. At the core of our work is the development of data-driven methods to identify, capture and synthesise intelligence on new health innovations. We develop and share cutting edge methods in horizon scanning, building capacity in the systems across the public, voluntary and industry sectors. We deliver essential intelligence and insights about medicines and MedTech innovation to the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), NHS England, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the NIHR, the UK Health Security Agency, the Department for Health and Social Care and industry - allowing these organisations to prepare for policies, regulation and frontline delivery for new, emerging and disruptive technologies.

Research interests
I'm interested in the most robust and efficient ways to evaluate evidence to improve health care. I explore methods of literature retrieval for systematic reviews, research synthesis methodologies, and the most appropriate methods and sources for horizon scanning.
I peer review for various journals including JMIR, Implementation Science, the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, and Health Information and Libraries Journal.
I contribute to and am previous module lead for the 'Introduction to Systematic Reviews and Critical Appraisal' module of the Masters in Public Health.
I am currently supervising a PhD and an MPhil student, and am on the Assessment panel for two further PhD students.
