Introduction
I am a medical sociologist and experienced qualitative researcher with over 20 years’ experience of leading and collaborating on applied health research. I work nationally and internationally with collaborators from a range of different academic and clinical backgrounds. I provide a social science perspective and methodological expertise to clinical research questions, postgraduate research supervision and postgraduate and undergraduate teaching. I am experienced in negotiating across disciplinary and organisational boundaries committed to delivering both high quality research and education.
My research is concerned with examining people's - patients and carers - experiences of, and decisions about, health and health care. My work focuses primarily on those living with long term conditions, and spans a range of clinical areas including: palliative care, transplantation, old age psychiatry, primary care and oral health care. I am a qualitative methodology co-applicant on the current and previous regional Research Design Service, and actively involved in NIHR grant and fellowship award programmes. I have a strong commitment to supporting and mentoring the careers of others. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and currently the Dean of Newcastle University Population Health Sciences Institute
Research Interests
My research is concerned with examining people's - patients and carers - experiences of, and decisions about, health and health care. My work focuses primarily on those living with long term conditions, and spans a range of clinical areas including: palliative care, transplantation, old age psychiatry, primary care medicine and oral health care.
Currently, I am collaborating with colleagues in across the university and specifically in the Institute of Transplantation, School of Dental Sciences and School of Pharmacy on a number of research projects.
Postgraduate Supervision
I am committed to supporting postgraduate research and I supervise postgraduate research students from both social science and clinical backgrounds. I have an excellent record of success, I have supervised over PhDs f to successful completion and regularly act as an internal and external examiner.
I have a strong commitment to the delivery of high quality teaching and have undertaken key leadership roles in Learning and Teaching. I am Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have designed and delivered undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes throughout my academic year. Specifically, I have led qualitative methods training at Masters level and as part of CPD programmes. I have also led medical sociology teaching as part of the undergraduate medical curriculum.
