Staff Profile

I am a clinical academic with a background in ophthalmology. Since qualifying I have benefited from the first three stages of the NIHR Integrated Academic Training pathway and am currently working within the 'Innovation, Methodology and Innovation' and 'Ageing and Geroscience' themes at the Population Heath Science Institute.

I also have a background in medical education, with a particular interest in clinical ophthalmology and digital health. 

My research interests focus on the implementation of artificial intelligence to the context of clinical ophthalmology, particularly in retinal disease. I am also interested in the nascent field of 'oculomics', whereby advances in ocular imaging and artificial intelligence techniques are unearthing novel diagnostic and prognostic markers for systemic disease and health.

Currently, I am collaborating with a number of higher education institutions, NHS foundation trusts and an industry partner (DeepMind) in order to explore the feasibility of artificial intelligence based treatment decisions for a severe form of age related macular degeneration, the commonest cause of blindness in the UK.

Locally, I sit on the committees of both the Newcastle University Ophthalmology Society and North East Trainees in Research Ophthalmology Network (NETRiON). Nationally I sit on both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' Academic sub-committee and Ophthalmology Trainees' Group committee.

I have a post graduate certificate in medical education and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. At present I contribute to the undergraduate MBBS and Physician Associate Studies programmes and co-supervise a doctoral student in the School of Engineering.
