Background

I am a biostatistician and genetic epidemiologist with extensive experience in health and medical research in academic and industry settings. Since 1993, I have designed and implemented health studies, analysed clinical trials and conducted training courses in statistical analysis and research methods for government institutions, pharmaceutical companies and international organizations. I have held research and academic appointments from leading universities in different countries. I have also worked at the Health Information, Evidence and Research Unit of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific where I led the assessment of the country health information profiles. I am involved in various translational health research and clinical studies either as investigator, statistician or named researcher. Having a wide range of experience in quantitative and qualitative studies, clinical trials and mixed methods research, I collaborate locally and internationally with experts from different academic and research disciplines.

I joined the academe in 2001 after working for several years in the private sector. I have more than 20 years experience working in higher education in different capacities. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and a Worldwide Recognised Tutor (University of London). I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Population Health Sciences Institute. My research interest focuses on the improvement of health conditions and treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and genetic diseases, among others. I lead the Artificial Intelligence in Health Research initiative at the Biostatistics Research Group and also serve as research/statistical adviser for the NIHR Research Support Service.

Research

My research interests include the following:

•   Digital health, artificial intelligence (AI) methods and modelling techniques that could be efficiently applied to answer questions on identification of disease states, treatment efficacy, treatment cost-effectiveness and disease prevention

•   Understanding the determinants of health and disease using real world data and big data analytical tools in biostatistics and epidemiology

•   Applications of AI in biomarker studies, healthcare and clinical trials

•   Population and family-based analysis methods in genetics


I am involved in several health studies and clinical trials. I collaborate internationally and serve in various trial steering committees and data monitoring committees. I also serve in the Newcastle Ethics Committee, REF Team and AI Working Group.


 

Teaching

I have been involved in module and curriculum design throughout my academic career. I deliver courses in different modes (on-campus, distance education, online, hybrid) and undertake key roles related to learning and teaching. I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and currently lead or teach in the following modules:
