Staff Profile
Marcus Brookes
NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
I am an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Translational and Clinical Research Institute and a member of the Sarcoma Research Group at Newcastle Centre for Cancer. My main research interests are fluorescence guided surgery and photodynamic therapy in soft tissue sarcoma.
Academic Supervisor:
Research Projects include the following:
Membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase as predictor of survival and candidate therapeutic target in Ewing sarcoma.
During my MRes I investigated the the role of surface protein MT1-MMP in Ewing sarcoma, identifying it as a potential therapeutic target and prognostic marker.
SarcoSIGHT: A Randomised-Control Trial of Fluorescence Guided Sarcoma Surgery Versus the Standard of Care
I am a co-applicant and member of the trial management group of SarcoSIGHT, an NIHR EME funded study which is the first surgical randomised control trial in sarcoma, investigating whether fluorescence guided surgery using ICG reduces the positive margin rate in high grade sarcoma.
Sarcoma margins
I am currently investigating the role of margins in local recurrence and overall survival and the variance of this effect between subtypes in high grade sarcomas, as part of an international collaboration.
ICONIC: Improving Outcomes Through Collaboration in OsteosarComa
I completed the NIHR associate PI programme working on the ICONIC trial, which aims to collect high quality data about patients with Osteosarcoma, as well as analysing blood and tissue samples. It aims to provide information about the aetiology and development of osteosarcoma, as well as improving understanding of variable treatment response to improve treatment choices in the future.
