I began my career studying Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at Oxford University before completing a D.Phi in the lab of Prof Philip Goulder studying CD8 T-cell responses to HIV and HIV adaptation to CD8 T-cell immune pressure. Following a career break, I was awarded a Wellcome Career Reentry Fellowship to continue exploring the theme of host/pathogen interactions in immunodeficient patients.
I am a strong advocate of open research and support the Wellcome Open Research (WOR) publishing platform through my role as Chair of the early career researcher advisory board for WOR.
I am also academic lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) in the Translational and Clinical Research Institute.
I work closely with clinicians and researchers in the Great North Children's Hospital and Translational and Clinical Research Institute to understand the role of Innate Lymphoid and T cells in immunodeficiency and transplant. I also collaborate as part of the UK PITCH study consortium which investigates the role of T cells in COVID infection and vaccination.
Current projects and studies
ILC Study : I lead the "ILC study" to investigate how Innate Lymphoid cells interactive with adaptive immune responses and how they might mediate signals from the gut microbiome during stem-cell transplant. These studies will provide insights into novel therapeutic interventions necessary to tackle stem-cell transplant complications such as Graft-versus-Host Disease.
Haplo4Cure : I collaborate with colleagues to better understand how memory T cells may improve immunity after TCRab/CD19-depleted haploidentical stem cell transplantation. These studies will inform better and safer transplantation.
PITCH Study : I co-lead the Newcastle University site as part of the PITCH study. Protective Immunity from T cells to Covid-19 in Health workers. We are a national collaboration of universities aiming to understand the way the immune system responds to the COVID-19 virus in healthcare workers.
I am a Lecturer on the Applied Immunobiology of Human Disease course.
