I am clinical academic with a focus on translational research. Clinically I provide specialist care in the disciplines of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry as a honorary consultant. I am involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

My research interests are translational in nature, spanning fundamental research to pragmatic clinical trials and public health research. My current research interests fall into four broad areas:

• Tobacco and novel nicotine products: oral health effects, cessation interventions, harm reduction roles and regulation
• Dental biofilms and periodontal clinical research
• Dental aerosols and cross infection
• Primary care-based research 

Novel nicotine products, particularly e-cigarettes, are my main research focus, having been the topic of my PhD. More recently I have been successful in substantial research funding (£2.8 million) for a multi-centre randomised controlled trial, the ENHANCE-D study. I led this application and am co-chief investigator on this ambitious project, one the largest interventional dental studies every completed in the UK. The study involves 51 funded research staff (excluding primary care practitioners), across seven UK universities, aiming to recruiting over 1000 participants from around 50 dental practices.
