Staff Profile

Mr Sandip Nandhra was appointed as a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon at Newcastle Hospitals in 2021 and is a Newcastle Health Innovation Partnership Senior Clinical Fellow at Newcastle University. He qualified from the Hull-York Medical School in 2008 where he also went on to obtain his Doctorate in venous disease. At this time he obtained a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education and a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Vascular Ultrasound. He moved to the North-East for his vascular training in 2014 and was awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer post in Newcastle in 2017 in which he obtained grant funding and developed the regional vascular research profile. 

In 2021 he was awarded a Newcastle Health and Innovations Partnership Senior Clinical Fellowship, a Newcastle University academic position. He now leads a diverse team of researchers with broad interests in optimising endovascular and clinical outcomes, acute limb ischaemia, sarcopenia and health inequalities and holds national research funding as both Chief Investigator and co-applicant.

He supervises MRes, MSc and Doctorate studies, as well as Summer studentships and SSC students. Along side this he supports the training and development of NIHR ACF's and ACL trainees. He is the Past-President of the Vascular and Endovascular Research Network, co-chair of the venous special interest group and an elected council member of the RSM Venous Forum and BSET council. There is plenty of opportunity for collaboration and already he and his team work with departments across the university (and nationally) in areas of shared interest, including sarcopenia, health-inequalities, clinical trials, imaging, haematology and artificial intelligence. He is keen to welcome and support healthcare professionals, undergraduates and post-graduates from a variety of backgrounds, to join the research group/team.

Clinically, Mr Nandhra maintains a broad endovascular practice including EVAR, CLTI and ALI management, with a specialist interest in Deep Venous disease within which he leads the Newcastle Deep venous loco-regional program. He maintains opens surgical practice including AAA repair, lower limb intervention and on call/urgent surgery.

He is involved in endovascular and surgical training locally and nationally participating in a variety of educational programs including ASPIRE, UKETS, ESVS, Venous Forum, Industry events and the British Society of Endovascular Therapists (BSET).
