Roles and Responsibilities
I am Clinical Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University and Consultant Psychiatrist in inpatient services care with the NTW Foundation NHS Trust. I work also with the Clinical Research Network. In the North-East and North Cumbria, I am co-lead for mental health, and deputy industry lead (cross-specialty) with a lead role in investigator initiated trials and, nationally, I am workstream lead for commercial research.
Qualifications
MBBS 1992
MRCPsych 1998
MD (HPA axis in mood disorder patients 2004)
Memberships
British Medical Association
British Association for Psychopharmacology
Royal College of Psychiatrists
Research Interests
I am interested in the pathophysiogy of mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder, the role of childhood experience and the application of this understanding to develop new treatment strategies.
Current Work
I have recently completed a treatment trial using a cortisol synthesis inhibitor in treatment resistant depression and an examination of the pathophysiology of chronic fatigue syndrome. I am involved in study which is examining language use in schizophrenia in order to better understand its psychopathology.
I am examining the impact of early childhood adversity on adult mood, brain (hippocampal) function and on the stress hormone system
Future Research
I think that there is tremendous potential to examine drugs that act on the HPA axis as new treatment strategies and I am interested in further exploring the links between early adversity, immune system, the HPA axis and illness.
