Faculty Fellowships
Faculty Fellowships support early-career scientists to develop an original research idea and secure external fellowship funding. The Fellowship provides two years salary funding, with the possibility of an extension to three years based on performance and offers:
- dedicated mentoring from experienced researchers
- training opportunities to support your early success in obtaining an externally funded fellowship
- financial support of up to £10K to produce pilot data for fellowship applications
- peer support from a cross-disciplinary cohort of talented early career researchers
- modern specialist research facilities
How to apply
You'll need to submit the following via our electronic system:
- Covering letter outlining your fit to the role
- CV with publications
- Confirmation of a Faculty sponsor who has agreed to support your Faculty Fellowship
- Faculty Fellowship Plan which summarises your research and plan to secure an externally funded fellowship.
Newcastle University Academic Track Fellowships
The Newcastle University Academic Track Fellowship scheme aims to find and develop our research leaders of the future. NUAcT fellowships are based in a Faculty Institute and provide researchers with five years salary funding and the following:
- up to £50K research expenses
- a PhD studentship
- subject to a successful review, a move to an open-ended academic contract
FMS Academic Track
FMS Academic track is available to clinical and non-clinical researchers applying for external fellowships that will be hosted by Newcastle University. If an external fellowship is accepted for Academic Track, the fellow is offered:
- dedicated mentoring from experienced researchers
- training opportunities to support your development as an independent researcher and group leader
- peer support from a cross-disciplinary cohort of talented early career researchers
- modern specialist research facilities
- the potential of progression to an open-ended academic position, subject to fellowship awarded and performance.
Eligibility
- fits one of our Faculty Research Themes
- personal non-clinical fellowships which allow researchers to create an independent research group
- funding typically covers a large fraction of FTE salary over 5 years or more (or equivalent for part time fellows)
- funding includes research costs (RAs, technicians, non-staff costs).
How to apply
If you intend to apply for an external fellowship and wish to request Faculty support and FMS Academic Track status, please submit your application to fms.fellowships@newcastle.ac.uk.
Information Required
- Your CV, including your current Academic Unit, research group, and which Research Theme and/or NUCoRE you are affiliated to.
- A concise summary of the proposed application (max 2 pages) that provides:
- the fellowship to be applied for (ideally with a link to the relevant webpage)
- the call closing date
- an outline of the proposed project and how it fits with the relevant Academic Unit, Research Theme and/or NUCoRE
- the length and approximate amount of funding/posts to be requested
- whether you have previously applied to this or other similar fellowships.
The application will be considered against the remit of the scheme, eligibility of the fellowship, and the fit to the Faculty's research profile. This review will be conducted on behalf of the Dean of Research and Innovation by a group including the Director of Research Career Development (Non-Clinical) and/or the Director of the NHRP Academy, the relevant Theme or NUCoRE Lead(s) and the relevant Head of Academic Unit in consultation with the Head of Faculty Finance.
