The Research Funding Development Team provides strategic pre-award research funding services which includes:

  • Funding intelligence including advice on how to use RESEARCHConnect, the funding search tool
  • Providing advice on developing your funding strategy, including fellowship suitability
  • Lay review of your funding application and mock interviews

If you are planning to undertake any research you must apply for ethical approval before work on the project begins. Resources offered by our University Research Governance Team include:

  • Training opportunities

If you are planning research that will involve NHS facilities, staff, patients or data you will need NHS ethics approval. The faculty can offer advice and guidance on:

  • Newcastle Sponsorship process
  • NHSREC and HRA approval via the IRAS system

If you want to involve patients and the public in your research, the Faculty Engagement team can help you develop the skills to:

  • Write Patient & Public Involvement (PPI), Engagement (PPE) and Participation (PPP) action plans and embed engagement in your research from an early stage
  • Run your own meaningful PPI, PPE and PPP events and activities.

Newcastle University Research Software Engineering

The Newcastle University Research Software Engineering Team develop high-quality software in collaboration with scientists, engineers and scholars from all research domains.  They can provide

  • Help with the writing of technical sections and data management plans as part of your grant applications
  • Software engineering expertise for your research projects
  • Software training around UNIX shell and programming with Python.

NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Hub

NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Hub

The NIHR RSS Hub provides free and confidential advice to individuals applying for funding for applied health and social care research. Working with individual researchers, the team will:

• identify appropriate funding streams, study design and involvement of patients and the public
• advise on feasibility, ethical considerations and development of the study team through access to collaborators with methodological expertise
• provide access to support, advice and expertise for all researchers across England

Internal Funding Opportunities

Internal Funding Opportunities

There are a number of Internal Funding Streams available to staff involved in research to support career development and research excellence. These include:

  • Research Excellence Development Awards are available to support personal professional development or fund a small research project that lets staff explore a new idea or develop data for external funding applications.
  • The Tilley Hale Awards fund innovative Patient and Public Engagement and Involvement projects
  • The Bridging Funding Scheme is available to retain research and technical staff whose employment depends upon external research funding.
