Project description
I will investigate the dynamics of offshore cylindrical structures under vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). These are due to waves and oscillatory flows.
I am using numerical models and experimental investigations.
Methodology and objectives
First, I will formulate and solve the problem for a rigid cylinder experiencing VIV in waves/oscillatory flows. I will then investigate the VIV phenomenon experimentally, also for a rigid cylinder, at the WWCT at Newcastle University. These experiments allow validation of the modelling work and observation of typical structural behaviours of the VIV process in oscillatory flows.
Result
We will have a better understanding of the VIV phenomena. This will help to improve design tools for offshore structures that may experience VIV in oscillatory flows.
