Aims

The aim of this module to introduce students to, and develop their understanding and skills in relation to professional practice (e.g. ethics, values, health and safety etc) and to support their continued professional development (CPD) in landscape planning and management

To develop students understanding of the Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management Competency Framework (e.g. ethics, judgements, environmental legislation/policy, biosecurity, health and safety), the broader issues associated with professional practice, and to apply these to their own skills development.

Outline Of Syllabus

Framed within the context of British environmental and ecological law and planning, the module follows the Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environment (CIEEMs) Competency Framework syllabus and Code of Professional Conduct. It is organised into two core components: 1) professional practice and 2) professional skills for landscape planners and managers in the UK.

In professional practice, students are introduced, through a series of lectures, to CIEEM's Competency Framework syllabus and Code of Conduct. This includes:

- To advance understanding and standards in the practice of ecology/environment management for the benefit of nature and people.
- To advance conservation, management, and enhancement of biodiversity and the ecological processes.

In professional skills, students lead their learning and professional development through: mapping their existing skills/knowledges against the competency framework; identifying gaps for their CPD; undertaking individually-tailored training and development; and reporting on/analysis their development.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures enable students to engage with core principles/values within the profession and the specifics of the CIEEM's Competency Framework.

1-to-1 tutorials will enable students to identify strengths and weaknesses in their knowledge and skills and to identify a targeted approach to their professional development.

Skills practice will allow students to develop their own CPD in accordance with CIEEM Competency Framework.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

A written diary encourages learners to engage with and reflect on learning material on a weekly basis. It also mirrors the CIEEM's Pathway to Chartership (Ecological or Environment) approach where graduates reflect on their learning as they practice.

Through a continued professional development proposal (CPD) and oral presentation on work undertaken as part of their CPD, students are assessed on their ability to identify and target gaps in theirs knowledge, source appropriate training, and relate their own learning and experience to the requirements of professional life.
