ECTS Credits: 5.0
European Credit Transfer System

Aims

To introduce the basic design concepts for offshore fixed and floating foundations/platforms.
To provide fundamental knowledge to understand key factors influencing the dynamic behaviours of offshore fixed and floating foundations.
To develop computational skills to predict the dynamic motion and structural response of offshore fixed and floating foundations.

Outline Of Syllabus

The syllabus comprises:
-       Environmental conditions.
-       Single- and multi-degree-of-freedom systems for offshore foundations under waves.
-       Dynamic seakeeping analysis of floating platforms.
- The learning will be formatively assessed with exercise and/or tutorials for each topic, and will involve the analysis calculation and/or description of theories for waves, hydrodynamic force predictions on single and multi-degree of freedom platform systems and associated static/dynamic analyses.
- There will be a number of tutorials and practice of calculation tests.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lecture notes, lecture videos and reading materials given out on Canvas together will familiarise students with the concepts of environmental conditions and loading, and dynamics of fixed and floating foundation analyses (IKO1-IKO4). Lectures will formalise learning related to the fundamental subjects of structural dynamics subject to environmental hydrodynamic and operational loading (ISO1-ISO4).

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

A class test provides a practice for students to solve a problem within a limited given time. The examination provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and the possession of subject-specific, cognitive, and key skills. This medium also allows students to demonstrate intended learning outcomes across a wide range of topics within the syllabus (IKO1-IKO4; ISO1-ISO4).
