Aims

The module aims to debate and explore a number of important topics shaping the global economy: this includes news topics such as the ‘eurozone crisis’, the banking crisis or the impact of the Chinese economy on the world economy. The module broadly resides in the discipline of International Business or International Management and makes use of case studies to complement theory. This should enable students to reach a well-grounded understanding of both theory and practice in business and management and relate it to the topical events in the world – at the global, national and regional level. The module aims to develop students’ critical awareness of major, current developments and to help them understand the connection between the news reported in the public domain and current topical debates, and the theory and practice of business and management. In achieving these aims, the module should help students develop as independent critical thinkers and astute professionals.

Outline Of Syllabus

As much as possible, the syllabus will be current-affairs-led i.e. events topical at the time of teaching will dictate the choice of relevant subject matter for lectures. The broad topic areas covered in class are likely to include (but not limited to):

- the changing face of globalization
- financial and political crises and their impact on business and management
- the changing economic landscape.

Teaching sessions are designed to accommodate the emergent, current-affairs-driven nature of the programme, as well as the range of subject matter covered in the module, which brings together knowledge from across the curriculum. Directed research and reading will provide a sound theoretical grounding for the students, whilst independent study will enable students to explore the themes of particular interest to them in more depth as well as stimulating independent thinking. The assessment preparation and completion time reflects the in-depth and creative nature of the assignment.

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The essay will allow the students to demonstrate their ability to think and work independently and to develop and demonstrate an in-depth critical understanding of the subject matter of the module.
