Staff Profile
Dr Matt Abbott
Business Development Manager
I support commercialisation activities for the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University. This support includes intellectual property (IP) identification, protection and management; commercial interactions; confidentiality, material transfer and collaboration agreements; grant applications, specifically IP and commercial exploitation plans; and technology assessments.
I graduated from Newcastle University with a BSc in Applied Biology (2010), followed by an Engineering Doctorate in Biopharmaceutical Development (2014). I trained briefly as a patent attorney at D Young & Co (2014) before moving to the cyber defence division of BAE Systems as a Business Development Manager, working on projects to help secure critical national infrastructure (2015). I then moved to a technology and innovation centre (CPI) to manage commercial biotechnology projects, including bioplastic production and drug manufacture (2017), before starting my role at Newcastle (2019).
