Air Pollution CPD

This course introduces the fundamentals of air pollution with a background on historical perspective, current air quality policies and standards.

Air Pollution programme

New dates: November 2023

Venue: Newcastle University

About the programme

The module aims to:

  • introduce the fundamentals of air pollution with a background on historical perspective on air pollution and a commentary on current air quality policies and standards
  • discuss major pollutants, their sources and their effects (environmental and health)
  • introduce the methods to estimate air pollution emission from point sources with an emphasis on power generation
  • examine the theory of dispersion of air pollution in the atmosphere.
  • discuss fundamental approaches for air pollution modelling
  • explore air quality monitoring and point source air pollution control methods
  • discuss renewable power generation and implications for air pollution of transitioning to net zero carbon
  • introduce the issues of indoor air pollution and personal exposure to air pollution

During the course we will cover the following topics:

  1. History of air pollution
  2. Sources of air pollution
  3. Health and environmental effects of major air pollutants
  4. Monitoring of emissions and air pollutants in ambient air
  5. Modelling and control of emission from industrial sources
  6. Air pollution from different power generation methods
  7. Chemistry and dispersion of air pollution in atmosphere
  8. Air pollution modelling approaches
  9. Impacts on the planet
  10. Indoor air pollution
