Applied Rock Engineering CPD

Develop your knowledge of geomaterials and their use in industry.

Applied Rock Engineering programme

Dates: October 2023

Venue: Newcastle University

About the programme

This module will develop your knowledge of geomaterials in the context of the extractive and construction industries. We focus on the analysis and design of engineered rock structures with applications in civil engineering, quarrying and open pit mining.

In this module you will learn:

  • how to describe rocks and soils in the context of investigation and as geological hazards
  • the controls and characteristics of mineral construction raw materials
  • testing techniques for rock materials and aggregates
  • hard and soft ground excavation techniques
  • the properties of rock materials and mass
  • types of failures of rock structures
  • techniques for stabilising rock structures
  • how to evaluate and analyse failures in rock structures

After completing this module you will be able to:

  • identify geological materials and hazards in industry
  • interpret laboratory results for rocks and aggregates
  • undertake reserve estimation
  • analyse and design rock structures
