Introduction to PhotoVoltaics CPD

This module aims to introduce primarily non-engineering students to the photovoltaics technologies available.

Introduction to Photovoltaics programme

New dates: November 2023

Venue: Newcastle University

About the programme

The module teach students from a non-engineering background about the technological, economic, environmental and resource aspects of photovoltaics (PV) technologies.

You will learn about cell and system operation and the range of applications currently addressed. We also discuss implementation aspects both technical and non-technical.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

  • appreciate the potential of PV to contribute to renewable energy production and reductions in CO2
  • critically evaluate the policy drivers at an international, national and regional level relating to renewable energy using PV
  • check the barriers to uptake PV as renewable energy sources
  • understand the solar resources available for energy production
  • test a range of applications of photovoltaics
  • appreciate the potential for future reduction in costs of PV systems through technological development
  • show an understanding of theoretical concepts and practical implementation associated with engineering systems and processes in renewable energy systems using PV
Tutors
Lectures

This module is delivered by a mixture of lecture, tutorial and independent study.
