Soil Modelling and Numerical Methods CPD
This module will give you an introduction to the models describing the behaviour of soil.
Soil Modelling and Numerical Methods programme
Dates: Monday 6 February - Friday 17 February 2023
Venue: Newcastle University
About the programme
This module will give an introduction to the basic features of constitutive soil behaviour models. It will also provide an understanding of the principles of numerical modelling.
In this module you will:
-
learn the advantages and limitations of soil behaviour models
-
cover ways of selecting suitable soil parameters
-
use finite/discrete element software for a thorough understanding of soil modelling
-
apply automation to software using a Python-based remote scripting interface
Lectures
This module is taught over a two week period.
Learning will be a combination of:
- presentations
- directed reading
-
specially prepared notes on the principles of numerical modelling in geotechnical engineering
- small group teaching exercises
- guided tutorials on relevant software
- practical computer sessions providing real-world examples of taught theory
