In this module, you'll get an understanding of the technical issues and the management of resources and solid waste.

About the programme
The course covers climate change, and resource and solid waste policies. You’ll examine the methods of storage, collection, transfer, treatment and disposal appropriate for industrialised and developing countries. You’ll investigate cities' strategies, urban metabolisms and the assessment options using Life Cycle Assessments.
You'll learn through a combination of:
- lectures
- small group teaching
- computer sessions
- reading materials
You will also have the opportunity to attend two field trips - visiting recycling facilities and disposal sites.
Lectures
By the end of this week you will:
- understand the implications of the production, resource management and environmental impact of solid waste management
- understand components of solid waste management infrastructure systems to minimize the above effects
- be aware of the significance of strategies, resource management, recycling, reuse and reclamation of solid wastes
- be familiar with relationships between inappropriate waste management practices and impacts on water, soil and sediment quality
You will learn:
- the current practices available and implement the systems available for sustainable resource and solid waste management
- how to carry out an assessment of the relationships between policies, (climate change and/or resource strategies) environmental guidelines, human activities and the environmental quality of impacted soils and water
- how to integrate technical solid waste management options and imposed environmental legislation and guidance to develop legal and safe solutions
