Meet Ali

Archaeology PhD

Hi there, I’m Ali. I heard about Newcastle University through a friend who had studied in the UK. I remember them telling me about the city’s natural beauty and pleasant weather. I was eager to develop my English language skills so applying seemed like a great opportunity for me.

My studies focus on archaeology. I already have a Master's degree in ancient archaeology from my home country, Iraq, so I came to Newcastle University for my research studies.

A beautiful city

It's my first experience studying abroad and I'm enjoying it. Id never visited the UK before arriving for my studies, and everything is very different from back home. What I like about Newcastle is that the city has beautiful heritage buildings, parks, and stunning forests nearby

The city is more beautiful than described and the people are very kind.

My course involves using GIS software and remote sensing training in the lab or computer room, but we also spend time conducting surveys and examining satellite imagery. As part of my studies, I have visited many beautiful archaeological sites in Newcastle and Durham.

Improving my language skills

The School of Modern Languages has played a significant role in improving my language skills through their programmes. They also provide a dedicated site for watching videos to support international students.

Improving my English while I study is important to my future. It allows me to communicate with colleagues who specialise in archaeology worldwide.

I enjoy learning and improving my skills as a student here. Im so grateful to Newcastle University for helping me develop myself and my English. After completing my PhD, I want to become a professor at an Iraqi university.
