Meet Jasmine

Dietetics MDiet

About Jasmine

Im Jasmine. I came to the UK to study an integrated Master's in dietetics as this subject isnt widely recognised in my home country, Malaysia. I also wanted to gain experience through placements which is something Newcastle offers.

Back at home, I heard great things about Newcastle University from my career counsellor. I was also interested in the module content and knew I wanted a degree accredited and approved by the leading bodies.

I was very happy when I heard the news I had been accepted. I loved the idea of being in the North East. I couldn’t see myself in a busy city, but Newcastle feels like somewhere between a big city and a small town.

I attended a virtual Open Day to get a better idea of the Newcastle University environment without having to travel all the way here. I applied through UCAS, which was a straightforward application process.

Practical placements

I've received so much support from peers and lecturers which is important as I am very far from my loved ones. As for my course, I love biology and learning about the body and the effects of food. We use the food handling lab to understand how people with specific diets have to prepare their meals.

I really like how hands-on the course is in terms of placement opportunities and getting to experience or witness the day-to-day life of a dietitian while learning professional skills along the way.

Home away from home

I was surprised how quick it was to walk to town from my accommodation and use public transport to escape from the city. Visiting parks in Jesmond Dene or the beaches of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay has been fun.

Newcastle is so diverse. I’ve even met people who grew up in the same town as I did! It was nice knowing there were people who could make Newcastle my home away from home. I also joined the Malaysian Society which has many events across the academic year.

Preparing for my future

I meet with my personal tutor every semester. Talking to them helps me reflect on my wellbeing while at university and check in on my academic progress. It’s always nice to receive the reassurance that I’m heading in the right direction and get advice when I need it.

When I graduate, I see myself working as a clinical dietician in a hospital. I’ll have the skills I need to help patients make better diet choices which will improve their overall health and wellbeing.
