Meet Chatwipa

Data Science, Machine Learning and AI Development MSc

Hello, my name is Chatwipa. Studying abroad has always been a personal goal of mine. I wanted to use the opportunity to broaden my perspective, as I believe that individuals from different backgrounds bring unique ideas and solutions.

I decided to apply to a university in the UK, as I felt that improving my English language skills were essential for expanding my knowledge and improving my professional life. Although I studied in an international programme in Thailand, I didn’t have the opportunity to use English in my daily life. I knew studying abroad would be an effective way to learn how to communicate confidently.

My primary reasons for choosing Newcastle University were due to the course, which covered the topics I wanted to learn to advance my career. Moreover, the University has strong global rankings, reflecting the quality of its courses, faculty, environment and facilities.

When looking at UK universities, Newcastle appeared to be a good city for international students, offering a vibrant and welcoming environment.

The application website was very convenient and user-friendly. The inquiry session was helpful and provided applicants with an easy way to ask any questions regarding the application process.

Support with settling in

The transition to the UK was a challenge at first. The food, culture and weather were big adjustments for me. But the city has many shops and supermarkets, including ones that stock Asian ingredients! Being able to cook familiar dishes has really reduced my homesickness and made the transition much smoother.

I was impressed by the support provided to international students, especially the Airport Meet and Greet service. I didn’t know how to travel from the airport to my accommodation, so it was reassuring to know that I’d be helped to get there safely.

To help international students settle in, the University also provides many brochures about living in Newcastle and the essential tasks to complete during the first few weeks, which were very helpful for me to follow.

Improving my English

All lecturers are highly approachable and always willing to help. I really like how my course not only focuses on theory but also provides plenty of practical experience. This balance helps me understand how to apply what I’ve learned in real-world situations, which I think will be invaluable for my future.

At the beginning of the course, I felt slightly uncomfortable speaking English and was unsure about the accuracy of my writing in assignments. Therefore, I enrolled in the In-Sessional English (RISE) programme. Now I feel much more confident and have improved my academic writing and speaking.

Activities outside my studies

I love getting involved with the University’s volunteering activities – especially Feel Good Crafts for Charity sessions. These are held throughout the year and involve writing Elf Mail for children in hospitals and sewing wiggly bags. Each session only takes two hours, making it easy to fit into my schedule alongside classes.

Outside my studies, I’ve also attended many trips outside Newcastle which were great experiences of learning UK history and culture. I enjoyed the NUFC St James’ Stadium tour, which was an incredible experience to learn about football.

The most enjoyable event I have attended is the crocheting session. It was a relaxing break from studies and something I’d never tried before! These events help me feel more connected to the University and city, meet new friends and find new hobbies

Events to explore career paths

After university, I want to find a data analysis role working in a healthcare-related company.

The University’s Careers Service offers a variety of useful events – I’ve attended several, such as company visits, workshops and application preparation sessions. I believe these give me the chance to explore potential career paths and develop skills to prepare for the future.
