Take Part in Our Research

Volunteer to take part in our research to further knowledge and improve treatments for others.

Have you ever wondered about your amazing brain and how it works? We’re looking for the answers, and from time to time our scientists need to recruit volunteers to take part in their experiments.

If you’d like to help us understand the brain and develop treatments for brain disorders, you can find out how to do that here.

Why should I get involved?

Getting involved is simple and it’s vital for advancing our research. You might have an interest in the brain and want to satisfy your curiosity, or you might want to do something to help people with brain-related conditions. Whatever your motivation, being a volunteer is both interesting and rewarding.

What will I need to do?

The method of testing and equipment we use varies from one experiment to another. One may require you to respond to sounds or images on a computer screen by pressing buttons. Another may involve recording brain activity using contacts placed on the scalp or having a brain scan.

In all cases, experiments will be harmless, and we’ll always give you a simple explanation of what you need to do and easy-to-follow instructions on the day.

All research environments are participant-friendly and safe. Every project must before any tests can begin and will follow strict guidelines.

If for any reason you want to drop out of an experiment, you can do so at any time with no questions asked.

What kinds of people are needed?

The researchers for each experiment will specify what kind of participants they need. Some experiments may be limited to a particular age range. Others will only be for people with specific conditions. Most studies will be for healthy individuals.

How long will it take?

Experiments can last between several minutes and a few hours. Some may require several visits to the university or might be in the form of a task to do at home. In each case, you’ll receive a description of what you’ll need to do and how many visits you’ll need to make.

Will I be rewarded?

In a personal sense, definitely. In addition, we’ll reimburse volunteers for any travelling expenses. In some cases, we may offer a small monetary gift to thank you for your participation depending on the length and complexity of the experiment.

If there are no suitable experiments listed below, you can complete an online registration form to indicate your interest in future experiments. Following the submission of your registration form, we’ll send you confirmation that your details have been added to our secure database. When a suitable experiment arises, the details are posted to everyone on the database with details of the researcher to contact if you want to take part. There’s never any obligation to participate, and you may opt out at any time.

Every time an opportunity to participate in an experiment occurs, you will receive an email with all the details. If you want to take part, you simply contact the researcher directly.

To be added to the database, please complete this form.

If you want to ask anything else about volunteering, please get in touch by emailing CentreForNeuroscience@ncl.ac.uk. Please include volunteer database in the subject line of your email. You only need to follow up opportunities that interest you.
