Aims
The module will build on the liaison and consecutive interpreting skills acquired at Stages 1 & 2, leading to advanced liaison interpreting and community/public service interpreting in specialised fields, e.g. medical and legal,education and social services. Particular emphasis will be put on the professional requirements of community interpreting, including codes of practice and ethical issues.
In addition, it will give students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with basic working skills and an awareness of the key professional issues in simultaneous interpreting, normally for one or two of three BA-language* pairs: EnglishFrench, EnglishGerman or EnglishSpanish.
*A-language is the translator’s language of main use (typically the mother tongue) and B-language the language of secondary use (typically a foreign or second language).

• Developing and enhancing liaison and consecutive interpreting skills including:
Analysis of speech type
Identification of main ideas and links
Memory practice
Note-taking
Reformulation, simplification, generalisation, omission, explanation
Summarising and recapitulation
Preparation research
• Developing an awareness of professional issues in community/public service interpreting
• Introduction to simultaneous interpreting
• Acquiring the subject-specific vocabulary to deal with interpreting in a legal, medical context, education or social services

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
• Practical sessions (in three different language strands) enable students to develop knowledge and skills (module-specific and key skills) in simulated professional environments.
• Lectures will look at principles of interpreting and explore strategies, which facilitate the interpreting process.
• The blended learning mode of teaching showed to be very effective as it allowed students time to reflect in their own time

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Both oral (interpreting) exams focus on students’ advanced liaison and community/public service interpreting skills (in semester 1) and consecutive interpreting (in semester 2). As professional issues will have been dealt with in greater depth at this stage, students’ awareness of appropriate professional conduct and their ability to apply it will form an important part of the assessment in the interpreting examination. This way, the theoretical side of the module is applied to a simulation of a real interpreting/professional scenario.
