Aims

In consonance with the overall aims of the degrees offered in the SML, this module will:

- build on language skills gained at Stages 1 and 2
- provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the Chinese language and with the ability to use it
with a high level of proficiency in academic and social environments
- prepare students for postgraduate study in areas that make extensive and intensive use of the
target language
- focus on further developing students' aural and written competence in the foreign language gained at stages 1 and 2, with a focus on the academic world.

Outline Of Syllabus

This module is aimed at final year students of Chinese, who have reached a near-native command of
the language, either because they took the ‘higher route’ (Level B, C, D) through their degree or
because they made outstanding progress and were permitted to omit Level C (Level A, B, D).

The syllabus comprises 3 scheduled hours per week, divided as follows:

1 Reading class
1 Listening class
1 Writing class

Students will be provided with audio-visual materials and written materials in a variety of academic contexts. They will practice written communication in the target language through a range of academic tasks such as reports, syntheses, commentaries or critical reviews. The audio-visual and written sources will cover cultural, political, economic and social issues relating to the Mandarin-speaking world.

A mid-Semester 2 exam will test students' ability to compose in the target language in a formal academic style.

Resit format is a 150-min written exam on reading and writing skills.
