Aims

This module aims to build upon the achievements made during your year abroad in China or those made in Level C Chinese and to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the Chinese language and the ability to use it at a high level of proficiency in professional environments. This includes:

- developing students' ability to deliver oral presentations, and to participate in critical debates in Chinese on a variety of topical issues, using appropriate range and register
- training students in the fundamentals of translation from Chinese to English.
- offering students a good understanding of Chinese used in business situations.
- Developing an appropriate level of inter-cultural sensitivity in students, enabling successful interpersonal communication in a range of different situations.
- Continuing to provide students with the necessary skills to become better language learners.

Outline Of Syllabus

1. Translation
You will develop skills in translation from Chinese to English.
2. Speaking
You will develop skills in expressing your opinions clearly, carrying on a discussion in Chinese, making your arguments clear and supporting them in an articulate manner.
3. Business Chinese
You will study several case studies of successful companies. Semester 1 cases focus on multinational companies and their expansion into China; Semester 2 cases focus on how Chinese companies enter overseas markets. You will master a specific vocabulary related to business Chinese and learn how to read and write documents related to business work.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Language classes will introduce, model and offer guidance in each of the skills that students are required to practise during the course, including advanced speaking, intensive reading, summary and commentary writing, oral presentation, written translation.
This module will be delivered in a mixture of Chinese (=the norm) and English (for the purpose of complex
explanations).

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The assessment is designed in such a way as to test all the skills mastered during scheduled learning and teaching activities, structured guided learning and individual study.

- An oral examination in Semester 2 (30%) will assess students' ability to make oral presentations and lead discussions.

- A written translation exam in Semester 2 (30%) will assess students' ability to translate text from CHN to ENG.

- A portfolio in Semesters 1 and 2 for Business Chinese (40%) will help students to assess their progress and identify their strengths and areas for improvement, thus stimulating their independent and reflective learning skills throughout the year.
