Aims
The module provides students with comprehensive study skills and also opportunities to develop broader transferable skills. The module aims to enable students to make the most of the learning opportunities offered through their core programme of study and set the foundation for them to be able to benefit fully from the rest of the programme.
Students will acquire skills in data acquisition and management, analysis and interpretation, business decision making and communication of findings to different audiences.
Outline Of Syllabus
The module will cover the following topics:
- Searching for information (electronic databases, key words, inclusion and exclusion)
- Library and web skills
- Research in IBM
- Self-managed learning
- Critical evaluation and writing
- Data analysis, quantitative and qualitative
- Communication - presenting information
- Academic integrity, referencing skills
- Reflective practice
- Use of Excel
- Basic statistics such as sampling methods, data presentation using graphical methods and summary statistics, probability concepts, regression and decision making
- Business case application

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The teaching methods are appropriate to allow students to develop a wide range of skills, from understanding basic concepts and facts to higher-order thinking. Lectures are used for the delivery of theory and explanation of methods, illustrated with examples, and for giving general feedback on marked work.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
An important aspect of this module is working effectively both as a group and as an individual to undertake a series of activities, demonstrating the skills required, analysing data and making decisions. Therefore, the assessment includes the following: group assessment on an agreed topical issue (40%) and computer assessment with basic statistics in the lab including its application to a case study (60%). Peer evaluation will be included in the group assessment in line with NUBS Groupwork Policy.
Formative assessments will occur in the workshops in both semesters to link the workshops to the summative assessment.
