Aims
The aim is to provide a broadly-based extension of core knowledge and skills in this field of engineering science, with applications of more advanced fluid mechanics for students who have studied this topic at university level for at least one year previously, covering advanced fluid mechanics and turbomachines.
Outline Of Syllabus
- Dimensional analysis and similarity, scale modelling, Buckingham’s pi theorem.
- Laminar and turbulent duct and pipe flows, Reynolds number and transition; local losses; pipe systems.
- Losses in series, energy line and hydraulic grade line, steady-flow-energy-equation and its application to full systems analysis.
- Advanced applications of momentum conservation (e.g. complex boundary conditions for analysis of boundary-layer flows, moving control volumes).
- Fluid Machinery: Pumps and turbines: performance characteristics; Selection and installation, principles of energy exchange, machine losses and characteristics; interaction with external system and operating point; non-dimensional groups, cavitation.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
To assess the student’s grasp of the basic qualitative and quantitative understanding represented by the knowledge outcomes, each student will undertake two open book on-line NUMBAS assessments, which will allow the module content to be broken down into two small, bite-sized sections to aid understanding and achievement.
