Outline Of Syllabus
This module offers a practice-based course which develops students' skills and understandings of contemporary fine art practice. The semester will entail students developing their own set of working methods, selecting media of their choice and identifying their own themes and subject matter in order to develop a supervised project of creative work. Individual and group tutorials, weekly lectures from visiting artists, cross-year discipline-specific fora and technical workshops complement and support individual production of students’ creative work.
Professional practice sessions and workshops in the LifeWorkArt component of the module assist students in the acquisition of skills and expertise that prepare them for the development and delivery of a group external LifeWorkArt project at the conclusion of the semester.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Individual and group tutorials focused on the week-by-week development of the student’s creative project form the principal basis of the teaching allowing bespoke support for work that is individual and self-initiated. This fosters increasingly independent management of a student’s practice as well as developing their capacity to critique their own work and that of others. This mode of teaching is complemented by participation in discipline-specific forums, technical workshops and the Visiting Speakers Lecture and seminar programme: these assist the development of technical, contextual and professional skills and knowledge. Guided independent study in the form of critical reflection, directed research inquiry and the up keep of an on-going studio notebook in digital or physical form further support the achievement of learning outcomes. LifeWorkArt sessions which include workshops, group discussion, visits (where possible) and tutorials provide opportunities to consider and develop awareness of key issues relating to professional practice. The variety of learning and teaching seeks to support what are increasingly individualised practices centred on the students production of a body of creative work.
Fine Art Guided Independent Study including project work and skills practice is focused on the individual development and production of experimental as well as fully realised artworks.
Scheduled teaching and learning activities such as workshops, demonstrations, individual tutorials and small group teaching will also be conducted present in person in the Fine Art studios and workshops (or synchronous online if made necessary by Covid-19 restrictions.). Where scheduled teaching and learning activities are delivered via non-synchronous online sessions they will be followed by a synchronous on-line drop-in Q&A session.
Nb. Scheduled teaching and learning activities will typically be conducted present in person in the Fine Art studios and workshops. Teaching methods may be liable to adjustment in response to changes to Government and University Covid-19 advice and restrictions. PiP teaching would be substituted by equivalent synchronous and asynchronous online delivery. Where scheduled teaching and learning activities are delivered via non-synchronous online sessions they will be followed by a synchronous on-line drop-in Q&A session.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Formative review of, and feedback on, work in progress is provided by 1-1 tutorials and in peer-group discussions during the course of the semester.
Summative assessment is by consideration of a body of artwork and associated supporting material and is submitted in the examination period at the end of the semester. This submission provides evidence of the ability to apply effective strategies to the investigation, development and realisation ofvisual ideas. It provides a view of how research, technical experimentation, contextual study, project management and professional awareness have been applied to the process of establishing an individual creative practice
