In a sceptical age, when pluralist cultures compete for attention, public art has failed to address the larger picture: what do we have in common; what lasts; what is worth symbolising? Charles Jencks has been involved in two projects in Northumberland that force these basic issues to the fore: cosmic landscapes and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. He argued that the museum may not be the only secular cathedral of our time.
