INSIGHTS Virtual Lectures: Collecting Classical Antiquity: Brian B. Shefton 100 years by Andrew Parkin
Andrew Parkin, Keeper of Archaeology, Great North Museum: Hancock
Date/Time: Thursday 25 June 2020, 17:30 - 18:00
Brian Shefton was instrumental in establishing Newcastle University’s Greek archaeology collection, which is currently housed in the Great North Museum: Hanock in a gallery which bears his name. The collection was intended as a university teaching resource and still fulfils this important function today. However, it has expanded its role far beyond its founder’s original intentions, being extensively used by schools studying the Ancient Greeks as well as providing an insight into the world of the Greeks for thousands of the Museum’s visitors.
This lecture provides some of the fascinating background to Brian’s life as well as commemorating his remarkable achievement in creating an internationally significant collection, which is widely recognised as one of the most important in the UK.
The lecture will be followed by a live Q&A with the speaker.
